Greetings Everyone,
Summer is most definitely here in my neck of California, we've already seen temperatures reaching triple digits, and while the tomato plants in my garden like the heat I'm not such a big fan. Luckily we've had a bit of a respite from the hot weather the last few days as some thunderstorms have moved in and brought with them some lower temperatures.
I recently returned from a short trip to the California coast, Big Sur area actually and I've been going through my film carefully since I got it back from the lab a few weeks ago. Yes, I still shoot film for all my artwork. I've quite excited about a number of pieces and I'll include some of them in future newsletters and on my website as a couple of them may make it into my 2010 releases.
This newsletter is full of all sorts of good stuff, show openings, a new workshop, my new posters, a limited time price reduction and an article I wrote regarding Kodak's decision to stop making Kodachrome. Enjoy!
Keep Cool,
Edward Mendes

Hasselblad Master Award

For the second year in a row I've been selected as one of the 10 finalist in the Hasselblad Master Awards in Landscape photography. This is an honor that I'm very proud of as the Hasselblad Master Awards are one of the most prestigious awards in photography.
The winner is determined by a jury that includes some the world's most recognized photography professionals. A new twist that is being done for the first time this year is Hasselblad is opening part of the selection process to the public. The idea is that you'll act as one of the jurors, you simply register at the Master's jury site, this way you can save your judging progress and come back to it later over the course of the summer. Once you've registered you have access to all the finalist in every category, I'm in Landscape. Each artist has a portfolio of 5 images which you rate on a scale of 1 to 5, you can even leave comments on the portfolio if you'd like. When you've finished hit save, if you'd like to come back later and continue jurying the images or change something simply log back in and do so.
I would greatly appreciate your help and support in this and if you could take a little time at least judging my work then thank you. I'm very excited about this award and will be keeping my fingers crossed until a winner is announced in 2010.

Goodbye Kodachrome
Times are certainly changing and they've been doing so quickly in the world of photography for a number of years now. As an art form photography has always been accepting of technology, after all, the actual creation of a picture isn't done by the artist's hand, instead it is done by a machine. No doubt the artist is by far the most important aspect of photography, but its a relationship between photographer and camera that may be stronger than any other in art, even painter and brush. After all how many painters do you know that have a collection of completely obsolete brushes they haven't used in decades on display in their home or studio, memories and loyalty to an inanimate partner in the creation process that they just can't seem to part with?
There's a third party in this triangle of creativity however, the actual photographic canvas that all images are created on (or at least were) film. For about a century and a half film was the foundation of photography, without it an image couldn't be made and each film, much like a snowflake, had its own characteristics that made it unique. Regardless of your need there was a film for every use and one of the most beloved of these films was Kodachrome, with its vivid yet natural colors and unheard of longevity Kodachrome was a staple in photographer's camera bags for over seven decades. Sadly Kodak announced a few days ago that it will soon stop making the iconic film because of low sells and the difficulty of manufacturing it. But Kodachrome will live on, in the carousels of family slide projectors in homes across the world, in the legendary images that were created on it and even the song that was sung about it.
This certainly marks a milestone in photography, but not a sad one. Photography today is more popular than ever, the digital sensors in today's cameras have open photography to a new generation of photographers not afraid to pick up a camera and play. Today photography is more popular than ever and its popularity shows no signs of slowing down, so with that I say thank you to Kodachrome, for the nights bright colors, the greens of summer and the wonderful memories it's helped us remember.
